Join us as a self-employed guide
Our guides show visitors around the permanent exhibition on the stages of life: from pregnancy and birth to illness, recovery and death.
You will make complex medical and social themes accessible and create space for wonder, reflection and conversation. Sometimes this includes sensitive topics. To do this, you will work with carefully developed guide packs that guarantee high-quality content whilst allowing space for you to add your own personal touches.
What will you be doing?
- You will guide visitors such as school groups, students, adults, healthcare professionals and other audiences.
- You will translate complex medical and scientific insights into clear and meaningful stories.
- You will guide visitors towards reflection and dialogue on health, care and ethics.
- You will handle sensitive topics with respect and professionalism.
- You will bring different perspectives together: those of the visitor, the patient, the researcher and the healthcare provider.
Who are we looking for?
- You will work as a self-employed guide.
- You are available at flexible times to give guided tours, upon request.
- You will commit to working with us for four years, becoming part of the museum’s long-term development.
- You are emphatic, respectful and professional.
- You enjoy working with clearly defined content whilst having the freedom to add your own personal touch.
- You have an excellent command of Dutch and/or English. Knowledge of French and/or German is an asset.
Experience as a guide, educator, trainer or facilitator is an asset, but not a requirement.
Selection process
During the selection process, we will ask you to give a short trial guided tour. We will assess, amongst other things:
- Clarity
- Structure and storytelling
- Interaction with the public
- Accuracy of content
- Comfort and professionalism when dealing with sensitive topics
The exact practical arrangements will be communicated in advance.

The Vesalius Museum is located at Minderbroedersstraat 12 on the Hertogensite in the centre of Leuven. - When does the museum open?
The museum officially opens its doors to the public on 12 and 13 December 2026. - What are the museum's opening hours?
The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10.00 to 17.00. It is also open one evening a month. - When can you start?
You can discuss this with Leen Vanelderen, Volunteer, Guide and Student Coordinator. All guided tours are offered on request.
